Eat Like You’re Shooting A Wedding |Homemade Protein Shake

2014-07-30_0004Since I started shooting weddings, I learned a lot of new things about my body and I gathered a lot of new habits. I realized that in order for me to function at 110% some things needed to be taken in consideration.

One of the big things for me was going to the gym, REGULARLY, and making sure that I take care of all those muscles I need to carry around all that heavy equipment. But I also wanted to make sure that I am fit enough to run all day at a wedding and not get tired quickly. Before I started going to the gym, regularly, my feet would hurt even after 4-5 hours at a wedding and the 2nd day my entire body would be aching. However, since then things changed and I am so glad to say that I am started not to feel the fatigued as much even after 12-15 hour weddings.

Another thing that I needed to change was what I eat, especially that day or morning. I started making sure that we have a cooler in the summer days with water on ice and some snacks in the car, at all times. Water is essential and dehydration kicks in fairly quickly on me, so making sure that I drink plenty of water before and during the wedding is key. But, another thing is that I get hungry pretty quickly and if i do not eat I get headaches. Weddings are hectic and sometimes there is no time to eat. The solution was making sure that on that day I get a meal that is high in protein. I started looking for protein bars and things of that sort, but mostly of them have a ridiculous amount of garbage you do not want to eat. So, I’ve been experimenting and I think I am getting closer and closer to making sure I eat healthy foods that keep me full a long time.

Today I experimented with some ingredients that are safe and high in protein in the same time. I have to say that my first home made protein shake was not perfect from the first try, but I made it work :). I am excited to start drinking this shakes before weddings and I’ll let you know how I will feel, hopefully not hungry :)!

P.S. Sorry for the bad quality pictures. I took them with my iPhone and the camera is not working properly.

What I used:

Almond butter, avocado, chia seeds, frozen blueberries, some milk (you could use yogurt), some water and a few drops of lime juice. Probably lemon would of been better, but I only had limes.

  • Hi Mari,

Thanks for sharing this. Nice to see another photographer thinking about healthy eating. I concur. I make protein smoothies fairly often. I use frozen strawberries, banana, rice protein powder, light coconut milk (from a can), ginger, pumpkin seeds, and perhaps a dash of cinnamon. I actually got this recipe from a nutritionist I’ve been working with. The rice protein powder doesn’t have a ton of protein. But it’s a much more gentle source of protein than cow’s milk or yogurt. Almond milk or coconut milk might also be an option instead of cow’s milk. The pumpkin seeds provide a fair amount of protein. And flax seeds are another option besides chia seeds (for fiber). See you soon!
